The Star Maker
Talent, hard work or luck – what is needed for to succeded all this? The producer of the Tokio Hotel knows it!
He is the producer, the lyricswriter and the manager of Tokio Hotel.
David Jost discovered the band from Magdeburg, built them up and leaded
them to the international success. The creative Hamburger is
workaholic, his calander is almost full of in the 24 hours of the day.
However, the 35 year-old, found the time and gave an interview
exclusively to YAM!. In addition, he revealed, what a star has to be
like in order to his success being lasting, and why is the will often
counts more thant, the talent…
YAM!: What does a star has to involved?
DAVID JOST: Possibilities! First of all, he needs an
emotional possibilty and besides that, he has to bring a very big
will-power. If the talent and the will are concentrated on a high level
in a artist, then his chance is very big, he will prevail sooner or
later.
YAM!: Can you do something with him, if he has got only one from the two features?
DAVID JOST: Yes, but it has to be present in extremely
strongly. If somebody has only talent, but he hasn’t got will-power,
then he needs luck, he has to surround himself with people, and has to
pursue to the success. But it may works in another way. If somebody a
rather average talent, but he has immense will-power and intelligence,
so he has a chance to become successful.
YAM!: Have you got a good example?
DAVID JOST: Madonna! In fact, she is not a really
outstanding singer, on the other hand she is very intelligent. Madonna,
in more than 20 year of period rose over to the world top. It is not
possible to make it with only fortune, nobody’s fortune hasn’t taken
for a long time. She leaves nothing to the fortuitous. Although Madonna
steps to the stage by herself, because of this is the one of the
largest movers of the music industry.
(I’m not sure in the last sentence so if you know it better, please correct it!)
YAM!: What is needed to be succesful and to being it permanently?
DAVID JOST: A very important feature, which has to be
accompanied by will-power, the inclination to make sacrifices, in order
to achieves his aim. It is almost always necessary to make sacrifices
for the big and long lasting success. This is not true for only the
music industry. Anybody needs many and unbelievable success and talent
who without making sacrifices wants to be successful for a long time.
YAM!: How do you notice the talent?
DAVID JOST: It is not possible to tell it generally. Mostly, talent can be felt. In this cases, I mostly trust in my instincts.
YAM!: And what did your instinct said when you saw Tokio Hotel at the first time?
DAVID JOST: I was completely shocked (laughs). It took me
totally unexpected. At that time, I had actually everything in order to
devote myself completely to a band. But I forgot all of my previous
plans promptly as soon as, I saw and heard the boys at the first time,
Bill was 13 years-old and they played their band-demo in Live for me
and my partners, in a little magdeburger rehearsalroom. Few hours later
we said goodbye to the boys and after that during the whole time I
screamed „Yes” and „Strike” (grings)!
YAM!: Did you know that Tokio Hotel will be so successful internationally?
DAVID JOST: No, of course, no. But then, I was dead cert
that in Germany, the band will get into the peak. Contrarily, I put
everything on the music industry. But it would have been self-delusion,
if I have waited for that, they will be become successful
internationally.
YAM!: What is the recipt of Tokio Hotel’s success?
DAVID JOST: The music market is full of with artists, who
will come in, if somebody told them what they have to do all day, and
what they have to take into consideration to everything works well. In
case of TH the recipt of success is the opposite.
YAM!: How?
DAVID JOST: If something is prescribed against Bill’s will
– whic is impossible anyway – he would lose a part of what he
represents. Bill needs to do what he can with full conviction – he may
be the best, wherein he can. When he was a little boy, he knew exactly,
what he wanted, besides what he didn’t want. People feel it. In
addition, in him, there are huge emotional extremeties. Only in some
decades can be found such a frontman in Germany. The band’s star
possibilitiy is very big. Even if I would have been totally idiot, and
I hit the wall only with the thing. (laughs)
(I’m not sure in the last sentence so if you know it better, please correct it!)
YAM!: Lyricswriter or manager – which one make you certainly?
DAVID JOST: Of course, I make lyrics writing certainly. Although,
manager is a creative and varied job. I am lucky, because I worked with
a band and I believe myself everyday brings something new. I wouldn’t
able to do this job, if it not be like this.
YAM!: Have you already started working on Tokio Hotel’s third album?
DAVID JOST: We have already started writing lyrics. At the
moment, Bill is in a very creative period and he come up with new
lyrics ideas constantly.
YAM!: What is the best song, that you have ever composed?
DAVID JOST: I hadn’t written it yet. Maybe come it yet! (laughs)
